Activation
The moment a new user experiences the product's core value — proxied by a specific in-product action that correlates with retention (Slack's '2,000 messages sent', Facebook's '7 friends in 10 days').

In plain English
The 'aha' moment, but measurable. If retention curves diverge sharply for users who do X vs those who don't, X is your activation event.
Example
Notion: created 5+ pages in the first week. Figma: shared a file with a teammate. Loom: recorded a second video after the first.
Why it matters
Activation is the single biggest lever in a PLG funnel. Improving activation 20% often lifts retention 30% and revenue 40% — the compounding is that violent. Every PLG company knows its number.
Common mistakes
- Setting activation on sign-up complete — that's registration, not activation
- Choosing an activation event that everyone hits (too easy) or almost nobody hits (too hard) — target ~30-50% first-week hit rate
- Not re-measuring the event as the product changes — activation events drift with the roadmap
