Category design
The practice of naming + framing a new market category around your product — so buyers evaluate you as the default rather than as one of many alternatives in an existing category.

In plain English
Instead of being the 87th CRM, be the first 'revenue operations platform.' Frame the problem in a way that puts you in the middle of the map.
Example
Salesforce created 'CRM' as a distinct category from contact managers. HubSpot created 'inbound marketing' before selling any tool for it. Gong created 'revenue intelligence' as separate from CRM + call recording.
Why it matters
Categories concentrate demand — a category leader captures ~70% of value. Category design is a founder-CEO discipline (nobody else has authority to redefine the market), and it starts pre-launch, not post-Series-A.
Common mistakes
- Confusing category design with positioning — positioning slots you in an existing category; category design creates a new one
- Starting category work after the product ships — the language is set by then
- Naming a category no one is asking about (no search volume, no analyst coverage)
