Founder Burnout: The Real Warning Signs

Not the cliché ones. The actual signals that mean you need to pull the lever before things break.

Burnout doesn't announce itself with exhaustion. It shows up as small, specific failures of judgment.

The five real signals

  1. You stop returning customer emails for 24-48 hours. Not because you're swamped — because you're avoiding.
  2. You make worse decisions than your past self would have. Past-you would never have shipped that update; current-you did.
  3. You start optimizing instead of building. Three days on theme colors, zero on the unsolved core problem.
  4. You feel resentment at small asks. A customer asks for a feature and your gut response is irritation.
  5. You stop telling your co-founder things. Information flow slows, then stops.

The lever you pull

Not a vacation. A surgical reduction of scope for two weeks. Tell the team. Tell the customers. Cut everything that isn't load-bearing.

What founders confuse with burnout

  • The dip — every founder hits a stretch where things suck. That's not burnout; that's the job.
  • A bad week — sleep, exercise, fix it.

Burnout is the pattern, not the moment.
