Board Update Template
Monthly or quarterly update for your board, investors, and key advisors. Honest, structured, action-oriented.
Last updated June 1, 2026
What it is
A monthly or quarterly update document that you send to your board and investors. Replaces the weekly call. Used to keep capital-providers and advisors informed of what's working, what isn't, what you need, and where you're going. Honest beats polished every single time.
When to use it
Monthly during fundraising or the first 18 months post-Series A. Quarterly thereafter if cadence with the board permits. Always: ahead of every board meeting (sent at least 48 hours before). Always: when something material breaks (don't surprise your board).
The template
# [Company Name] — Board Update — [Month YYYY] **Date:** [DATE] **Author:** [CEO Name] --- ## 1. Headline [1-2 sentences. The single most important thing about this month. Be specific.] > Example: "MRR grew 18% to $124k, driven by the new mid-market motion. Sales cycle dropped from 67 to 42 days. We're hiring AE #2 next week." ## 2. Key metrics Pick 5-7 metrics that actually matter. Include trend. Don't hide misses. | Metric | Last month | This month | Trend | |---|---|---|---| | MRR | $105k | $124k | +18% | | Net new customers | 12 | 16 | +33% | | Churn (logo) | 2.1% | 2.4% | +0.3pp | | Burn (net) | $182k | $176k | -3% | | Runway (months) | 14 | 13 | -1 | | Active pipeline | $340k | $420k | +24% | ## 3. Wins 3-5 things that worked. Be specific; "made progress on hiring" doesn't count. - [Specific win — what was the result, in dollars, customers, or shipped artefact] - [Specific win] - [Specific win] ## 4. Misses + what we're doing about them This section is the most important. Investors trust founders who own misses. - **[Miss]**: [What didn't work, why, what we've changed] - **[Miss]**: [What didn't work, why, what we've changed] ## 5. Asks What we need from the board / investors this month. Specific. Not "intros to investors" — name the type of investor, ideal cheque size, sector. - [Specific ask 1] - [Specific ask 2] - [Specific ask 3] ## 6. Runway + plan - **Cash on hand:** $[amount] - **Net monthly burn:** $[amount] - **Runway:** [N months] - **Next milestone before raising:** [Specific metric — $X MRR, Y customers, Z product launch] ## 7. Looking ahead [2-3 sentences. Headline focus for the coming month. The thing you'll be reporting on next.] --- **Signed:** [CEO] **Reach me:** [Email + best way to contact for urgent items] **Next update:** [DATE]
Common mistakes
- Hiding the misses — investors find out anyway, and the trust loss is irreversible
- Listing every metric instead of the 5-7 that matter — buries the signal
- Vague asks ('any intros would help') — gets nothing back; specific asks get specific help
- Sending the update after the board call — defeats the purpose; send 48h before
- Polished language that hides struggle — your board has seen 50 companies; they recognise spin
